How do you lead in an all-consuming, purpose-driven mission and stay well? This is the challenge facing Helen Robinson, CEO of the Auckland City Mission, tasked with advocating for and supporting the country’s most marginalised people, and whose mission it is to eliminate homelessness and poverty.
Helen Robinson offers a masterclass for leaders in avoiding burnout and managing self-care. Listen to the rigour and discipline Helen brings to protecting her resilience and how she avoids becoming overwhelmed by the scale of the challenge she faces. As she explains, “What I’ve learned over time is to really land squarely on doing what I can do. Today, what is it that I can do?”
Helen acknowledges her work has deep personal impact and has built an effective support team around her to ensure she can continue to perform at a high level. “Ever since I’ve done this work, I’ve been in some supervisory work every three weeks at least. And I have a work coach, and a personal trainer. There are people who surround me at all levels”.
As well as supporting individual wellbeing and resilience, Helen and her team are building a wellbeing-supportive culture, acknowledging the impact of leadership role modelling and the challenge of moving initiatives from an individual to a cultural frame. Anyone wanting to build a wellbeing culture will gain insights and ideas they can apply in their own organisation.
